Air Canada announcement a welcome boost for Bombardier
The announcement this week that Air Canada has signed a letter of intent with Bombardier to purchase as many as 75 of the new C-series aircraft is welcome news for the aerospace company, coming as it does on the back of disappointing end of year results and the announcement of 7,000 job losses across the Bombardier group worldwide. Over the next two years, more than 1,000 jobs are set to be lost from Bombardier’s manufacturing facility in Belfast, where the wings for the C-series aircraft are manufactured in a state-of-the-art plant built on the site of the former Shorts aircraft factory. It is hoped that the Air Canada announcement will mark a significant upturn in the fortunes of the C-series aircraft, for which orders to date have somewhat lagged behind industry forecasts.
